Mentors

Reboot has secured mentors with a variety of backgrounds which will support the students in developing both their strategy and pitch. The mentors will share their valuable business experience and industry insights during the Saturday afternoon working session and Sunday morning pitch deck creation.

Kyle Cheriton

Kyle’s career experience includes leadership positions with global brands including Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts, The Walt Disney Company, and United Airlines. He also was involved in startup ventures Arista Networks, Rakuten Linkshare and Martiniburger. His background is in the area of consumer marketing, business development, re-engineering and brand management. Kyle spent more than twenty years living in Japan and working in key Asian markets. He now lives on the UBC campus and is an active mentor at e@UBC.

Navin Schaduangrat

Navin is a former consultant and a graduate of the UBC MBA's class of 2016. Since his MBA, Navin has been working with tech startups here in Vancouver. He helped grow Visualizing from 30,000 to 300,000 users, and to take Retarget Links to market from an MVP. Currently, he leads sales ops and digital marketing for Vidigami, an ed-tech platform helping schools make the most of their media assets and engagement with families in a personalized and engaging manner.

Olivia Norton

Olivia Norton is an engineer, maker of minds and co-founder of Sanctuary AI - an AGI company spun out of Kindred.ai. Prior to founding Sanctuary, Olivia was the lead engineer for the Artificial General Intelligence group at Kindred where she focused on cognitive architecture development for real-time control of robotic embodiments. Her previous professional experience includes software consulting in the energy industry, as well as research and development work in the field of biomedical imaging at the Institute for Bio-mechanics at ETH Zurich and the Bone Imaging Lab/Human Performance Lab at the University of Calgary.

She holds a Bachelor of Science with distinction in computer engineering from University of Calgary and a Master in Engineering in electrical and computer engineering from University of British Columbia.

Devin Durrant

Devin is an entrepreneur with 9 years experience in growing businesses. He has led multidisciplinary teams in Canada and the United States on projects valued over $20 million. He enjoys challenges and is not afraid to get his hands dirty.

Andrew Haughian

Andrew has over 15 years of energy and industrial experience. He began his career in the upstream oil and gas industry and transitioned into engineering risk management consulting. He has a deep understanding of advanced materials commercialization.

He serves on the board of CarbonCure Technologies, Energy Storage Systems Inc. and Tivra Corporation. He previously served on the boards of RSI Inc. and Boulder Ionics which were sold in 2014. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the UoT and a MBA from UBC

Vasilii Triandafilidi

Vasilii is an aspiring entrepreneur, dreamer, and PHD Candidate in CHEMBIO Engineering. While trying to commercialize his research on smart polymers and participating in start-up programs and competitions, he became dissatisfied with his experiences. Most of the programs were too focused on technology push rather than doing a market pull. With his vision of creating a platform to watch the industry problems with student teams to solve them, he co-founded innovation onboard. Besides innovation onboard, Vasilii acted as a graduate advisor of envision student design team (+50 Multi-Project Design Group and Winner of the 2017 Aiche World Chem-E-Car Competition), he is a graduate of graduate management consulting program and winner fo the 2016 business case competition.

Hussain Kherodawala

Hussain graduated with an MBA from Sauder School of Business, UBC. His MBA curriculum concentrated on entrepreneurship and innovation. He brings business development experience from various industries such as eCommerce, print packaging, life sciences and most recently, commercial banking.

His previous roles have focused on forging high impact strategic partnerships for the organizations he has been a part of. Before moving to Canada, Hussain worked in Dubai, India, and lived briefly in Germany.

Marshall Behrns

Marshall is an experienced business consultant and leader with a track record of success in developing, supporting and executing strategically important initiatives in the areas of Innovation, Operational Excellence, Continuous Improvement, Innovation Management, Change Management, and Enterprise Data Management. Additionally, he is very effective in engaging cross- functional teams – both internal and external - to define the business problem, to drive business insights and to develop practical solutions.

He’s currently leading the development of BCLC’s newest game concept, GEO.

Ted Mui

Ted is the founder and CEO of PiiK Games, a Vancouver-based mobile game publisher with a focus on esports and competitive gaming.

A veteran in the mobile gaming industry with a passion for emerging markets and technology, Ted has held senior positions in marketing and business development at Zynga in China and Roadhouse Interactive in Canada.

Ted has spent 10 years working/studying in Hong Kong and Beijing, and holds a MBA from from China's Tsinghua University and a BA from UBC.

Sarah Applebaum

Sarah is an Executive Search Consultant with Corporate Recruiters, connecting top-tier professionals with innovative technology companies.

Sarah provides CRL's clients with unique insights into what is required to build a successful business, raise capital and different stages of the company lifecycle, and help build teams that are set up for success. With 5+ years of Venture Capital experience, Sarah has a deep understanding of business operations and key success factors for both start-up and growth stage companies.

Most recently as Director of Pangaea Spark @ Pangaea Ventures, Sarah was responsible for developing and executing the firm’s seed- stage investment strategy. Sarah has worked closely with companies across a wide variety of sectors, including additive manufacturing, agriculture, automotive, molecular diagnostics, and advanced materials.

Judges

Similar to last year, Reboot's judges bring extensive entrepreneurial and business experience to the table. There is no coddling in this competition and judges aren't afraid to give you their honest opinions, both good and bad. Be prepared to answer some tough questions and receive feedback that will be important throughout your entrepreneurial career.

Janelle Goulard

Janelle Goulard is the Director of Health Investment at Pangaea Ventures. Pangaea Ventures is the world leader in advanced materials venture capital. Janelle has over ten years of experience working in healthcare both in private investments and management consulting. She has spent most of her career at GE Healthcare, based in the US and Europe. Janelle worked with both private and public health organizations and launched a startup that became a joint venture between GE and Microsoft. She was an associate with a leading Canadian private equity firm and most recently with a Vancouver-based Venture Capital firm investing in digital health technologies.

Janelle has a MBA from the University of British Columbia in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and a BComm from McGill University. She currently serves as a director on the board of Anxiety Canada and leads initiatives on the Diversity Taskforce and Young Professional Committee as part the Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association.

Brian Stubbs

Brian specializes in operations with a focus on new product development and expansion and growth. His entrepreneurial interest started when he developed and brought to market the healthy snack product, Martin's Crispy Apple Chips, which are now carried in Starbucks and Costco across Canada.

After moving to Vancouver, he engaged in startups focused on growth and expansion. Most recently, Brian has been involved in operations at Article, and e-commerce company specializing in furniture. Brian has helped Article operationally through hyper- growth (over 600% in two years) while maintaining profitability, increasing customer service offerings, and innovating in the furniture industry.

Francis Steiner

Currently, Director of HATCH UBC’s accelerator, Francis provides early-stage companies with business advice to accelerate their growth and manages the programme. After his MBA in London Business School he joined Braxton Associates, Deloitte’s Strategy arm in London, England, developing the quantitative and qualitative analysis to support strategic business solutions. Then he joined PwC, where he led and completed multiple due diligence (DD) projects most notably for William Hill, Premier Foods and Rank Hovis MacDougall.

Since 2002, Francis has been the Principal at Godfrey, Graseby and Reeves – Innovation and Entrepreneurship, launching four start- ups, with the last company exiting in August 2018. His most recent project includes working with two spinouts from BMW (Germany - ongoing) and DD for BlackLion Capital (2016).

Roberto Monteleone

Since joining RBC in 2013, Roberto has had the pleasure of helping a variety of fascinating organizations leverage the resources of RBC to help their business. Eamonn Gamble

Eamonn is a finance professional with a broad range of experience in providing capital for small and mid-sized companies. This experience encompasses traditional commercial lending and equity capital markets, as well as the growing field of impact investing. He has worked on behalf of lenders, underwriters, outside consultants and a number of externally- financed organizations, developing a sense of each actor’s needs and motivations, and the most efficient tools to meet those needs.

Eamonn now has the pleasure of working in the Knowledge-Based Industries sector in Vancouver as a commercial lender.

Helen Zhou

Helen is a strong advocate for trade and investment between Canada and Asia Pacific countries. She has significant international work experience in business, government and academic institutions including, Ernst & Young, the Canadian Embassy in China, and UBC. She demonstrated an expertise in assisting clients in implementing their global strategy with a focus on trade, investment and market entry between China and Canada.

She has superior international business development skills by successfully helping 6 Canadian companies to navigate resources, attract Chinese investments and expand to the Chinese markets. In her recent experience, she helped international companies to set up their North American headquarters in BC. Helen is also a CPA, CA with over 5 years of experience in M&A, reporting and regulatory requirements for both private and publicly traded companies.

Jeff Hemmett

Jeff specializes in launching early-stage startups, and building a company’s first go- to-market teams and strategies. Notable Vancouver tech businesses he has helped grow include Thinkific, Hootsuite, and currently Keela, where he is Chief Revenue Officer - overseeing Marketing, Sales, and Customer Success.

To date Jeff has also helped secure $2MM in early-stage venture funding. Notable customers Jeff has acquired include Facebook, IBM, the United Nations, and Microsoft. In his spare time he cooks, cycles, golfs terribly, and advises/consults for startups.
